Somersworth was settled before 1700 and was first called Sligo, after the Irish county of Sligo in Ireland.  It was incorporated in 1893.  The town was home to gristmills and sawmills, and brick mill buildings.  Today it is home to many buildings with Victorian architecture and a retail center with many large chain stores.  

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, Somersworth’s population at the time was 11,477 people.  This included 4,687 households and 3,079 families.  The average family size was 2.95 and the average household size was 2.44.  Somersworth is comprised of 9.8 square miles of land and 0.2 square miles of water, making it the smallest city in the state. 

Somersworth Real Estate and Homes:  In 2000, there were 4,841 homes and an average of 495 homes (houses / condos) per square mile.  In 2007, it was estimated that real estate in Somersworth was comprised of a total of 5,262 homes.  This included 2,422 single family homes and 2,334 multi-unit homes.
